Discrepancy, separation and Riesz energy of finite point sets on the unit sphere
For d > 2, we consider asymptotically equidistributed sequences of Sd codes, with an upper bound δ on spherical cap discrepancy, and a lower bound ∆ on separation. For such sequences, if 0 < s < d, then the difference between the normalized Riesz s energy of each code, and the normalized s-energy double integral on the sphere is bounded above by O ( δ 1−s/d ∆−s N−s/d ) , where N is the number o...

When does a sequence of spherical codes with “good” spherical cap discrepancy, and “good” separation also have “good” Riesz s-energy? For d > 2 and the Riesz s-energy for 0 < s < d, we consider asymptotically equidistributed sequences of S codes with an upper bound δ on discrepancy and a lower bound ∆ on separation. For such sequences, the difference between the normalized Riesz s-energy and th...
متن کاملDiscrepancy, separation and Riesz energy of finite point sets on compact connected Riemannian manifolds
On a smooth compact connected d-dimensional Riemannian manifold M , if 0< s < d then an asymptotically equidistributed sequence of finite subsets of M that is also well-separated yields a sequence of Riesz s-energies that converges to the energy double integral, with a rate of convergence depending on the geodesic ball discrepancy. This generalizes a known result for the sphere.
متن کاملMinimal Energy of 100 Point Charges on the Unit Sphere
Before 1909, atoms were thought to consist of a diffuse positive charge surrounded by electrons (the “plum pudding” model). In order to predict the properties of the elements on the periodic table with this model, the distribution of electrons on a sphere had to be studied. This problem was named after Thomson, the originator of the plum pudding model and the first to study it. In 1909, Rutherf...

Invariants of topological spaces of dimension three play a major role in many areas, in particular . . . Introduction by the Organisers The workshop Invariants of topological spaces of dimension three, organised by Max Muster (München) and Bill E. Xample (New York) was well attended with over 30 participants with broad geographic representation from all continents. This workshop was a nice blen...
